Phonemic Awareness and Phonics

ABC Mommy and Me - an alphabet recognition program that displays the letter in uppercase and lowercase and if the student clicks on the letter it will say the letter.

A.B.Cow - students enter the missing letter from the alphabet.

Alphabet Action - displays the letters of the alphabet and students can click on a letter and see it, hear it, and see a word that begins with the selected letter.

Alphabits for Kids- provides 6 alphabet activities for students including matching letter, letter comes before, letter comes after, matching upper and lower case letters and more.

Building Language for Literacy-student find matching letters and rhyming word at this site.

Chicken Stacker - students must select the word with the correct vowel sound.

Dolch Word Lists - provides 11 lists with the words and activities to have students participate in.

Early Childhood Learning Education Network - provides activities for primary students about colors, numbers, letters, shapes, words, and more. The activities are outstanding and do not require the students to read information.

The Hungry Thing - a phonetic awareness activity that asks students to match pictures that rhyme.

Language Arts Activities - provides interactive activities for colors, numbers alphabet, spelling and more.

Learning Planet - provides interactive numbers, counting, and the alphabet.

Little Explorer's Picture Dictionary  - a dictionary for younger students.

Name Talk: Exploring Letter-sound Knowledge in a Primary Classroom (K-2)-students explore their knowledge of letter sounds then use a stapleless book tool on the Internet.

PBS Between the Lions - provides songs, stories, and activities.  Click on Games to see numerous engaging activities for practicing reading literacy skills.

Sadlier Oxford Phonics Activities - a great wealth of phonics activities for grades K-6.

Scholastics Phonics and Decoding Resources-a list of resources provided by Scholastic.

Seuss University - provides reading activities for online and to print out and play.

Sight Words - provides cards that can be printed and activities for grades 1-4.

StarFall - provides  activities that have students create words from onset and rimes. These activities reinforce the DIBELS Phonemic Segmentation Fluency and threading Strand 1, concept 2.

Vowel Take Home Cards - provides cards of various vowel sounds to help students practice their vowel patterns to print out, use at school or take home to practice.

Comprehension and Fluency

Fluency Through Fables-this site has several fables to help students improve comprehension. There are also online quizzes for the students.

Scholastic Reading and Language Arts Content Index - provides a variety of lesson plans, reproducibles, and activities in reading and language arts.

Power Proofreading - students select their grade level and must proofread selections of text and correct the errors.

 

Spelling and Grammar

Grammar Blaster-Grammar practice for grades 2-5.

Interactive Spelling: Adding "ed" - a tutorial on when to add "ed" to words.

Prefix Skills - provides matching, concentration, word search and flash cards on prefixes.

Wonder Spell - the program presents a picture and students click on the letters of the alphabet to spell the simple words.

 

General Activities

Book Adventure - a free reading motivation program similar to Accelerated Reader for children in grades K-8. The site allows students to create their own book lists from over 6,000 recommended titles.  The students then take multiple-choice quizzes on the books they've read in print and are eligible to earn points and prizes. The students must register to use the site; however, registration is free.

FunSchool - provides a variety of activities for preschool through grade six.

CyberGuides - provides integrated activities for popular books.

Language Arts WebQuests - WebQuests are Internet activities that promote critical thinking in students as they solve real world tasks in an inquiry based learning environment using reading, comprehension and problem solving skills.

Early Childhood Technology Literacy Project - provides books in PowerPoint you can download to use with early emergent readers.

Little Animals Activity Centre - the BBC offers interactive stories for primary students.

Mighty Books- a collection of books that are read to children, including books written by students. Students click on the appropriate age level and are given a series of books to choose from. Teachers can have students participate in a variety of contests.

Tools
